ATA 32-10 Main Landing Gear & Doors
Part of ATA 32-00-00 LANDING GEAR
Main Landing Gear & Doors
The main landing gear assembly consists of two independent struts, one on each side of the aircraft fuselage. Each main landing gear assembly includes the shock strut, side strut, drag strut, and wheel and brake assemblies.
Components
The main landing gear includes the following major components:
- Shock absorber strut
- Torque links
- Trunnion fitting
- Side strut
- Drag strut
- Wheel and tire assemblies
- Brake assemblies
- Position sensors
- Doors and actuators
Operation
During retraction, hydraulic pressure is applied to the retract side of the main landing gear actuator. As the landing gear begins to retract, the door actuator extends, opening the gear doors. When the gear is fully retracted, the uplock mechanism engages to hold the gear in the up position.
Maintenance Considerations
Regular inspection of the main landing gear is critical for safe operation. Key maintenance items include:
- Checking shock strut extension and fluid levels
- Inspecting for corrosion and damage
- Lubricating all pivot points according to the maintenance schedule
- Checking tire condition and pressure
- Inspecting brake wear indicators
- Verifying proper operation of position indication systems
